Seniors Attend Scavenger Hunt at UK
Nearly 175 students attended the annual UK trip which has become a tradition for Dual Credit Senior English classes.
For the last six years, Dual Credit Senior English students end the semester with college preparatory activities including a scavenger hunt on the campus of University of Kentucky.
“I got the idea for the trip during the first year I taught Dual Credit,” said Mrs. Wendy Turner. “Because we have time at the end of the semester, I put together a mini-unit that I thought would be beneficial to students.”
Students have two hours on the campus to complete up to 65 items on the list. Some items require picture evidence.
“The best part was running all over campus talking to everyone and anyone we saw trying to find our way around. Also getting pictures with random people was a highlight,” said Rachel Fister.
Mrs. Turner and Mr. Eddie Mullins took seven sections of Dual Credit English students on the trip over a two day period so that the teams could go in shifts. Their “home base” was Kennedy’s Book Store. According to Mrs. Turner, Kennedy’s employees welcome the classes every year, even giving participants a 10percent discount at the store.
“Sarah, the manager, and I feel like old friends now,” said Mrs. Turner. “[the employees] are great with the students.”
The 65 scavenger hunt items include finding where certain offices, like the ombudsman or the registrar are located.
“We were able to explore almost every inch of campus today which will be very beneficial in the future,” said Rachel Fister.
According to the teachers, the goal of the project was to help students see what it’s like to navigate a real college campus, regardless of where they plan to attend.
“I thought the scavenger hunt gave me a good idea of what the first day of college will be like. I got lost, had to ask strangers for directions, and experienced how long it takes to make my way from building to building,” said Deebha Adhikari.
For students who plan to attend UK, it was like a dry run.
“The best parts of the trip were having the opportunity to learn where so many things are on UK’s campus before I go there in the fall, and going to Steak & Shake afterwards,” said Kamryn Stewart.
