Being Single on Valentine’s Day

Hi, my name is Abby… and… I am single. They say the first step to recovery is admitting there is an issue.

But honestly, I’m not all that worked up about being single.
Would I like to have a man on my arm? Absolutely. But being single until that time happens isn’t so bad.

For starters, it keeps jealousy out of the equation. So things between friends and other friends can go smoothly.

Say you are a girl who has a guy friend that works at a movie theater. By being single, she has no problem going to see a free movie with her friend. It is a fun outing and saves money.

With a boyfriend though, she might feel guilty or he might get jealous.
Staying single just keeps a lot of the negative emotions that occur during a relationship, at bay.

Also, you have a lot more time with your friends. Instead of constantly being with your significant other, you are able to have “girl time” or hang out with the bros.
This can consist of going bowling, lying out by the pool, gossiping, exercising, seeing movies, etc.  Anything that allows you to spend time with your friends is beneficial, because it helps to rebuild and strengthen the nonromantic relationships within your life, which may come in handy later on down the road when you need to talk to someone about something that is going on in your life.

The best part about being single though is being able to look at all the eye-candy surrounding you.

You have no obligation to anyone but yourself, so why waste the freedom. You can call a guy cute or a girl hot without the risk of offending another person. Then you just have fun flirting with these attractive peers. Who knows, it may lead to a future relationship.

I’m not going to lie and say that being single is all lollipops and rainbows. There are points where you get downtrodden and lonely, and think “why does everyone else but me have that special someone to spend time with?” These “pity party” moments are fine as long as they don’t occur too often. But, many singles participate in a “pity party” on Valentine’s Day because they feel left out of the celebration.

But honestly, there are upsides to our situation.

We singles don’t have to spend money on someone else, we have the option of getting together a group of people to have fun, and we always have the prospect of being in a relationship next year.

Would I want to stay single forever? Heck no. I know that there is a man out there for me, I just haven’t found him and he hasn’t found me.

I don’t know when my knight in shining armor will appear, maybe tomorrow, maybe through the rest of this year, or maybe even in college, but I’m not going to pine until he shows up. I’m going to have fun, flirt and be myself.

They say that when you stop wishing for something, it just appears. That’s what I hope will happen to me.

In life sometimes when you let go, things just happen to fall into place.
