A Look Back at Homecoming Week
From the “prep rally” to the door decorations put up by teachers to the game and dance itself, homecoming is an important new part of Dunbar’s student culture. The homecoming football game is a tradition that has been around for years, but Dunbar just started hosting a homecoming dance last year.
The student council was in charge of organizing and hosting the dance this year. The theme for this year was Red, Black and Boom, and the week leading up to homecoming was dubbed “Spirit Week” and themes were assigned to each day.
The “Prep Rally,” held on Sept. 18, was a celebration of fall sports as well as a way to build school spirit. Games were played, Carpool Karaoke was showcased, and the 2017 homecoming court was announced including freshmen Emma Jinright and Sloan Scroggin, sophomores Eleanor Davis, Paloma Bravo and Tommy Baird, juniors Taylor Colony and Drew Whitley, and seniors Payton Baker, Jasmine Ahmad, Rachel Wagers, Annie Vandenburg, LeAnna Williams, Zach Jones, Zsombor Gal, Josh Szydlik, Brendan Hord, and Ramsey Amoudi.
Teachers throughout the school participated in the door decoration contest themed “Beat Douglass.”
“The theme for my door is Spider-Man, the Frederick Douglass Broncos are caught in Spider-Man’s Web because they are going to lose,” said math teacher Mrs. Lisa Montgomery.
The homecoming game was held on Sept. 22, but unfortunately, Dunbar fell to Frederick Douglas with a final score of 0 – 52. The week concluded with the homecoming dance on Sept. 23.
“As a senior it was really awesome to see us connect to the underclassmen. I felt unified for this dance and that hasn’t happened in my past years and I really felt like Dunbar came together over this dance…Everyone should go to homecoming because we haven’t always had it…it’s a great way to socialize, have spirit and have fun at your school,” senior Mackenzie McConnell said.
