Murphy Powell, a senior at Dunbar, has verbally committed to playing volleyball for the Emory Eagles in Atlanta, Georgia.

Powell’s love for volleyball began in the sixth grade, unintentionally.  She was playing basketball for KBA when she noticed a game of volleyball in the corner of the gym. This sparked her interest and she has been a devoted player ever since.

“The adrenaline rush is just one of my favorite things in the world and I love showing off my scars and bruises,” said Powell.

Powell is an outside hitter for Lexington United Volleyball, where the coaching staff and her teammates have given her an extraordinary experience. She is a six-rotation player, meaning she stays in the whole game. Powell traveled along this challenging athletic road with the aid of her parents, friends, and coaches, and continues to express her gratitude.

“They’re always encouraging and making sure I’m having fun…. because if it’s not fun why do it?” Powell said.

The adrenaline rush is just one of my favorite things in the world and I love showing off my scars and bruises.

Powell has been going to the summer volleyball camp at Emory University since her freshman year. She started the recruiting process at the end of her freshman year and feels that Emory is “the best of the best.”

“It clicked and I fell in love with the place. It had good food, which is very important,” said Powell. “The rooms and dorms are really nice and it has really nice facilities…everything was just perfect.”

Many Dunbar students are excited for her as she looks forward to this new chapter of her life.

“After working so hard, if anyone deserves this opportunity, it’s definitely Murphy,” said senior Maddie Carter, a friend of Powell’s. “We wish her the best and are confident she will do great things.”
