Dunbar’s Current Events Class

Senior Rebecca Chapman details her experiences as a student in Dunbar’s Current Events class.

“Current Events” is a discussion-based class that is purely student-led and is ever-changing based on the news and evolving events around us. It’s a little-to-no homework kind of class, but students manage to do research and bring it to the next class for discussion on topics of their choosing.

One thing I love about this class is how open-minded the students have been this year. They’ve confronted some very serious issues like the #metoo movement, school shootings and racism in a very mature and responsible way.

One of my favorite discussions was that of the Falcon Heavy, a rocket that can land back on Earth. The discussion quickly turned into an expression of optimism for the future, talking about inhabiting other planets and eventual planet hopping. Of course, there was a person who referred to Elon Musk as a textbook Disney villain, but differing opinions and an open mind is what makes the class great. To understand the other point of view is to be well-educated on a topic.

“One thing I love about this class is how open-minded the students have been this year. It’s a class I look forward to every day,” Dunbar Social Studies teacher Mrs. Michelle Williams said.

The class itself is played mainly by ear, as news is always evolving. The class very much is centered around discussion and respecting others opinions in order to become more educated. It’s a class dictated by the students.

The students give themselves assignments, the students decide what their final is and the students decide how they are graded. For any student motivated to learn, Current Events is the class to take.
