A New Incentive to Stay off Your Phone in School

Students love the new app, Pocket Points, that allows them to earn savings simply by locking their phones.

Staying focused in class isn’t always a top priority for most students, but what happens when you get rewarded for staying off your phone and paying attention?

Luckily, there is an app that is sweeping over Dunbar that can make this idea come to a reality. It is called “Pocket Points” and it can help save you money for staying off your phone.

The way it works is quite simple: open the app on campus, lock your phone, and start gaining points. These points can be used at local and online businesses for eligibility on discounts, coupons, or gifts.

Users get 1 point for every 20 minutes that is spent being off their phone. When students unlock their phone at the end of class, a receipt will pop up  that shows how long the time was spent off of the phone and how many points were earned.

Pocket Points also includes bonus features in the app that presents opportunities to earn even more points. On “2x Tuesday,” you’ll earn two points every time your gift fills up. There is also a Level Bonus that will help you earn points at a slightly faster rate the more you level up.

To see where Dunbar ranks, students can look at the School Bonus rate that fills as the students participate. The more points earned, the higher the School Bonus will fill.

Students at Dunbar are pleased with the introduction of this app.

“I really like what the app offers as far as food and clothing” says junior Olivia Geveden.

“I definitely suggest it” senior Dennis Mashindi said. ‘“If anything, it helps you in school because it allows you to pay attention and listen in class.”
