Academic team does well in KY Governor’s Cup

Dunbar’s academic team competed in the Kentucky Governor’s Cup that ended in Louisville on Monday. The Governor’s Cup includes all teams in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and teams must win at the District and Regional levels in order to compete. Dunbar’s Quick Recall Team was the state runner-up and the Future Problem Solving team came in fourth place. Dunbar was the second-place overall team. Players on Dunbar's Academic Team won in virtually all areas of competition at their Regional Governor's Cup competition on Feb. 15. The Governor's Cup competition is a statewide quiz bowl tournament amongst high schools and middle schools. There are three major components to the competition: quick recall, tests and future problem solving competitions. Quick recall involves teams from each school, usually consisting of four players, answering questions. Two rounds of ten questions are completed. If a team answers correctly, they have the chance to answer three bonus points. Each question, whether 'toss-up' (not bonus)...

Senior Art Xu has been playing ping-pong for 11 years. He said that he started playing when he was five and has continued to play ever since. Currently, he enjoys playing the sport both recreationally and competitively. “I enjoy playing ping-pong because it’s fun for me, I’ve gotten really good at it so I can show off my skill to everyone,” said Xu. He attends the Dunbar ping-pong club regularly to play with other Dunbar students. “Anyone can come and play and it’s always a good time,” said Xu. The Dunbar Academic Team, led by special education teacher Ms. Susan Magedanz, recently placed first among other high schools in The Governor’s Cup at the Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky. The final score revealed that they placed fourth in problem-solving and they were a quarterfinalist in the quick-recall contest. The team is now headed to Internationals, which will be in June at Indiana University. The team has back-to-back wins at state as well as three wins out of the past four years that have they competed. The team was led by senior Vania Ma, junior Valerie Sarge and junior Athena Kern.
