Behind the Covers

October 21, 2013

Upon walking past a book display in any high school library, one might see several books with cover art containing scantily clad couples in evocative poses, suggesting more of what’s to come inside. There is a general agreement that the amount of sexual situations and content broadly labeled “inappropriate” being published in young adult novels is steadily rising. These books can be considered...

In with the Old, Out with the New

Erin Pyle, Online Editor

October 21, 2013

Confession: I am a shopaholic. It is pretty bad, but at least I can admit it, right? After admitting this and thinking about it for a few days, I made the decision that I am not going to buy any new clothes, shoes or jewelry until Christmas. Not only is this going to be extremely difficult for me to not shop, but it is also going to be a challenge for me to create outfits with only my existing clothes because practically everyone at Dunbar has seen all my clothes already. I mean, I have gone to school with those people all of my life. I want to wear new, fun outfits this year, but how can I do this if I am not buying...

October 21, 2013

By the time you reach high school, there are a lot of things to memorize. From your cell phone number to your email password, the list seems endless. However, your social security number is one of the most important numbers to memorize. High school is the time in life when you become more responsible and independent, so it is important that you know this number by heart. As you continue to get older, you will begin to use your social security number more and more. Having your social security number memorized comes with benefits such as being able to apply for jobs, opening bank accounts and filing taxes. “I’ve...

University of Kentucky Tailgating

Meredith Nichols, Staff Reporter

September 25, 2013

It’s that time of year again. Not just football season in general, but Kentucky football season and therefore tailgating is back and in action. Some people think that tailgating is better than the actual game and I wouldn’t blame them.  A tailgating favorite, for girls at least, is getting dressed up. In Lexington, usually it’s cool enough to wear boots and scarves, but also not too cold to pull out your favorite blue and white dresses. It’s always fun to dress up and feel pretty and good, especially since you’re going to see almost everyone you know. When you dress nice it makes you want to take pictures...

Courtesy in the Cafeteria

Staff Editorial

May 29, 2013

Every day more than 2,100 students choose to eat their midday meal in the cafeteria here at Dunbar. Lunch is a chance for friends to catch up with each other while recharging for the rest of the school day. If all goes smoothly, the daily visit to the cafeteria is one of the brightest parts of a Dunbar student’s day.  After all, nothing can ruin the pleasure of good company and good food, right? Well, no. Every day, students act rudely to each other and to the cafeteria staff. They might be forgetful, malicious or just not mindful of their actions. Whatever the reason, Dunbar students need to review basic manners...

Kentucky Kitchens

Josiah Howlett, Staff Reporter

May 28, 2013

The sun shines bright on our old Kentucky home, and the abundance of southern food glistens. While much of the attention given to Kentucky stems from the annual Kentucky Derby and production of coal, there are many Kentucky food recipes that have gained national recognition as well. One of the most recognizable Kentucky foods is the famed Kentucky Fried Chicken of the KFC restaurant chain. The “Original Recipe” chicken has been around since 1940. It might be the most sought after tastes for fried chicken in the world, and now you can make it in your own home. To make the “Original Recipe” seasoning, you will...

I, Kentuckian

Julie Graf, Staff Reporter

May 28, 2013

You can either be proud or embarrassed to say you’re from Kentucky. We urge you to be Kentucky Proud. To explain why our state is a terrific place to call home, we made a list of the many quirks of living in Kentucky: 1. Everyone and their grandma cheers for the UK Wildcats or the Louisville Cardinals. Pick a side and wear blue or red for the rest of your days. 2. When people from outside Kentucky ask you if you wear shoes, you are amused. Not. 3. Ale-8 is the soft drink of choice. Supporting local businesses can be quite refreshing! 4. Even if you’re not a rider, you’ve attempted to giddy up on a horse’s...

Dunbar Memorial Garden Prepares for Plant Sale

Abby Florence, Editor-in-Chief

May 1, 2013

Many Dunbar students may have noticed the yellow caution tape that has been strung up recently around the Memorial Garden and have wondered what is going on. It's simple: the group in charge of the garden is getting ready for a plant sale. Friends and family associated with this trust work all throughout the year to revitalize the Memorial Garden , which sits behind the cafeteria. The main contributors to this garden are the parents of Jesse Higginbotham, a Dunbar student who passed away in 2007. Jesse's parents, Jerome Higginbotham and Rebecca Woloch, are founders of the Jesse Higginbotham Technology Trust,...
