The Dunbar baseball team hosted West Jessamine high school on April 10. West Jessamine (10-4), was coming off of a no-hitter thrown by Tucker Greer, and was ready to repeat that performance.

At the start, it was a pitcher battle between senior Isaac Taylor and senior Max Mahon. Very few runners were on base for either team and hits came far and few. Taylor’s relief came in the 7th inning from junior Connor Langfels, as did Mahon’s relief coming from junior Mark Leonard. Both tossed two scoreless innings, but the Dunbar pitching staff shutout was halted in the 10th inning by West Jessamine’s bats and Dunbar’s mistakes. Sophomore Austin Shepherd earned his first loss of the season. Dunbar lost the game 3-0.

With a quick turnaround, Dunbar hosted Eastern Louisville (3-9) last April 11 at noon. It was another neck and neck game with senior pitcher Evan Nicoulin on the mound for the Dogs.

The first run was scored by Eastern in the top of the sixth inning. The Eagles were up 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth where big hits from the dogs tied the game up at 2-2. Going into the top of the seventh, Nicoulin’s fatigue took over and let another run score giving the Eagles the lead 3-2. With tempers flaring and words being yelled across the field, both teams were warned. The Dogs earned 2 walks along with a string of hits to set up the walk off double from senior first basemen Jacob Herrin.

With the win Dunbar goes to 7-4. The team will travel to Henry Clay (4-11) on April 17, and come home on April 18 to host Butler High School (7-3) of Louisville, KY.
